&#38;nbsp;유승희(SeungHee You)는 인간의 불안정성과 모순, 그리고 이를 엮어 관계와 질서를 형성하려는 충동에 주목하며 회화, 조각, 텍스트를 통해 작업한다. 이러한 관심은 인간이 본질적으로 불안정하며 상반된 감정과 태도를 동시에 지닌 모순적인 존재라는 인식에서 출발한다. 더 나아가 작가는 이러한 모순이 개인의 내면에 국한되지 않고, 인간을 둘러싼 세계의 원리와 구조 속에서도 끊임없이 발생한다는 점에 주목한다.


이 과정에서 드러나는 인간의 불안은 의미를 생성하고 구조를 구축하려는 인간의 근원적인 충동을 발생시킨다. 작가는 이러한 의미 생성의 충동을, 경계를 탐구하는 과정에서 드러나는 해체적 상태들을 다시 엮고 구성하는 방식을 통해 구체화한다.


일상적인 사물과 연약한 재료를 사용하는 작가의 작업은 부분과 전체, 긍정과 부정, 열림과 닫힘과 같은 이율배반적인 경계를 다룬다. 이 과정에서 기존에 고정되어 있던 의미와 구조는 의도적으로 해체된다. 그러나 이러한 해체는 파괴를 목적으로 하기보다는, 흩어진 조각들을 다시 엮어 새로운 관계와 구조를 형성하기 위한 조건으로 작동한다.


그 과정에서 파편화된 감정과 기억, 상징들은 하나의 고정된 의미로 수렴되지 않는다. 대신 개인의 경험과 세계의 구조가 맞물리며 어긋나는 지점에서 임시적인 질서를 이룬다. 이는 의미를 해체하는 데 그치지 않고, 인간과 세계가 만들어내는 모순 속에서 의미가 생성되는 과정을 드러내려는 시도이다.


즉흥성, 콜라주적 구조, 비학문적인 드로잉을 통해 작가는 이러한 모순을 해결해야 할 문제가 아니라 인간과 세계가 공존하는 조건으로 받아들인다. 따라서 작가는 자신의 경험 속에서 발생하는 혼란과 무질서에서 출발해, 예술적 행위 속에서 질서를 찾아감으로써 모순과의 공존을 실천한다. 이를 통해 작가는 동시대의 파편화된 세계 속에서 인간이 어떻게 관계를 맺고 의미를 구성해 나가는지를 질문하며, 불안정한 세계 속에서도 지속적으로 연결을 시도하고 균형을 다시 모색하려는 인간의 가능성을 제안한다.

&#38;nbsp;워싱턴한국문화원(원장 김정훈, 이하 문화원)은 2월&#38;nbsp;3일(금)부터&#38;nbsp;3월&#38;nbsp;29일(수)까지 문화원&#38;nbsp;2층 전시장에서 서완호,&#38;nbsp;유승희,&#38;nbsp;최은지&#38;nbsp;3인의 한국 작가들이 참여하는‘장소 없는 장소&#38;nbsp;(Placeless Places)’전시를 개최한다.

본 전시는 비대면 활동이 일상화된 현대 사회에서 장소가 갖는 의미를 돌아보고자 기획되었다. 장소성을 작품의 주된 주제로 삼는 동시대 작가들의 최신 회화 작품&#38;nbsp;30여 점을 소개하고 관람객에게 오늘날 장소가 우리에게 갖는 의미를 생각해 보는 기회를 제공한다.&#38;nbsp;전시에 참여한&#38;nbsp;3인의 작가는 모두 장소성을 잃어버린 공간을 소재로 작품을 제작한다.

“평안과 자유가 보장된 공간으로서의 집이 사라지고 있다. 현재 우리가 사는 집이 사치의 도구가 되고 정체 모호한 형상으로 정형화되었지만 이제 가혹하리만큼 낯선 집을 나와 친숙함과 따뜻함과 달콤함을 간직꿈결 같은 집으로 돌아가자.”주거지와 관련된 정책, 문화, 사업은 동시대를 사는 우리가 접하는 가장 핫한 이슈이다. 그중에서도 집은 주거를 넘어 경제적 가치의 의미로 발전되어 자산의 척도가 되고 있다.&#38;nbsp;재산으로서의 집은 우리 시대의 극심한 양극화를 초래하였고,&#38;nbsp;그로 인해 집이 주는 심연의 가치는 상실되었다.&#38;nbsp;작가는 이러한 가혹한 현실 앞에서 과연 집이 주는 본연의 가치가 무엇인지를 묻지 않을 수 없었다.
&#38;lt;스윗 홈&#38;gt;에는 천편일률적인 형상은 없다. 거기에는 자유롭고 독특한 조합이 있고 가볍고 무의미한 재료가 넘친다. 흔한 소재로 장식함으로써 사물은 낯설지 않다. 단순하면서도 잔잔한 공간을 구성한다. 철사와 깃털,&#38;nbsp;테이프와 절구통이라는 재료의 부조화는 양극화의 시대를 담고 있다.&#38;nbsp;그리고 반복적인 패턴을 방해하는 형상들의 집합이 담긴 드로잉도 갈팡질팡하는 시대와 닮아있다.&#38;nbsp;이 형상들이 공간에 배치될 때 그 오묘한 조합은 그 안에서 꿈결같은 아련한 순간으로 친근하게 다가온다.

우화적 이미지와 텍스트&#38;nbsp;


&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;본 작품은 이미지와 텍스트를 활용한 조형 실험에 대한 연구이다. 평소 작업을 ‘메모’와 같이 대하는 본인은 이번 작품을 통해 작가의 생각과 이미지를 자연스럽게 이야기 하듯이 펼쳐내고자 하였다. 그래서 작업은 모아둔 텍스트를 이미지화하는 것에서 시작되었다. 또한 일상에서 주변의 것들을 통해 순간적으로 끄적여지는 ‘진지하기도 하면서 엉뚱한’ 메모와 같은 이미지를 표현하기 위해 우화적 이미지와 율동감 있는 필기체를 사용하였다. 작품은 크게 &#38;lt;감상의 회로&#38;gt;, &#38;lt;어린아이의 그림책 이해방식&#38;gt;, &#38;lt;읽는 이야기 그림: Why ducks can’t fly&#38;gt; 3가지로 구성되어 있다.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp; 작품에서 이미지와 텍스트는 분리되어 있지 않고 서로의 주변을 맴돌고 있기에 감상자가 이미지와 텍스트 사이를 오가며 보는 것과 읽는 것을 반복하게 한다. 보는 것과 읽는 것의 반복은 직관과 이성의 판단을 동시다발적으로 일으킨다. 동시적으로 반응하는 직관과 이성은 이미지와 텍스트를 복합적으로 이해하게 한다. 마치 언어를 배워가고 있는 어린아이가 그림책을 읽을 때 이미지와 텍스트를 분리하지 않고 복합적으로 이해하듯, 본 연구자는 어린아이의 그림책 이해방식과 같이 감상자가 이미지와 텍스트를 오가며 도달하는 복합적 이해를 통해 새로운 의미를 발견할 수 있다고 보았다. 이미지는 여러 가지 해석의 가능성을 열어두는 무한함을 갖는다. 반면 일반적으로 텍스트를 읽을 때는 텍스트에서 비롯한 연상과 고유 의미로 의해 해석이 한정된다. 그렇기에 텍스트의 한정적 의미와 이미지의 무한적 해석의 특성은 결합할 때 서로를 보완한다. 더불어 이미지와 텍스트 사이를 자연스럽게 오가는 과정은 의미를 추측해나가는 자발적인 참여를 유도한다. 본 작품은 이미지가 갖는 은유적인 특성과 텍스트가 지닌 구체성과 명확성의 특징이 서로의 양가적인 개념을 와해시키며 창의적인 해석을 촉발시키는 데에서 무한한 가능성을 찾는다.

과(and)의 공간


&#38;nbsp;자크 데리다(Jacques Derrida, 1930-2004)는 어떤 에세이에서 ‘과/그리고(and)’라는 말에 대해 이렇게 주석을 달았다. “과의 존재 방식에 대한 놀라움, 즉 과의 의미가 있으면서도 없고, 무언가를 향하면서도 행하지 않는다는 것에 대한 놀라움은... 모든 해체의 영원한 숙제다.” _자크 데리다의 유령들 중에. 
‘과’가 존재하는 방식은 경계에, 문턱에 서 있는 상태이다. 본인의 작품도 a와 b 사이에서 어느 한쪽에 속하지도 벗어나지도 않으면서 경계에 서 있는 그런 것들이다. 
접기와 펼침
 열기와 닫기 
연결과 구분 
부분과 전체 
고정과 유동 사이에서 자신의 상태를 명확히 드러내지 않는다. 
종이가 접히면서 만들어진 자국에서 파생되는 사각의 공간, 데칼코마니의 우연적 형상처럼, 사각의 공간은 접히고 펼쳐지며 상호 관계 속에서 새로운 이미지를 생성한다. 그 사각의 공간은 하나였다가 전체였다가 어느 한 곳에 고정되지 않는다. 계속해서 상호 작용한다. 또한 곳곳에 등장하는 괄호의 형상은 여는 괄호와 닫는 괄호가 짝을 이루지 않고 서로가 개체가 되어 이것도 저것도 아닌 비어 있는 공간을 반복적으로 만들어내는 신기한 모양이다. 본인은 이러한 상호관계적 작업 과정, 데칼코마니식의 반 우연적 방식, 짝을 이루지 않는 괄호를 통해 “과(and)”의 공간을 채워나간다.&#38;nbsp; 
매번 드나드는 작업실이라는 공간에 규격화된 흰색 종이로 바닥을 점유함은 본인이 공간을 대하는 태도이다. 신발을 벗고 종이를 밟는 순간, 방도 갤러리도 작업실도 아닌 낯선 중간 단계를 경험하게 하면서 과(and)의 감각을 환기한다. 규격호된 종이는 규칙이나 불규칙의 방식이 아닌 그저 작품을 감상 하기 위해 서야 하는 지점 즉 작품과의 상호 관계적 동선에 맞춰서 바닥에 붙여진다. 다소 좁고 아슬아슬하거나 답답한 구조는 본인이 작품을 만들어내는 과정에서 오브제들과 거리를 두기보단 가까이에서 부대끼며 그들과 이야기하듯 풀어내는 방식으로부터 기인한다. 공간 가운데에 떡하니 가로막고 있는 가림막, 이유 모를 위치에 우두커니 서 있는 사물들, 흰색 종이 위에서 벗어나지 않게 되는 동선. 과(and)의 공간에는 제한된 일상 가운데 이유 없는 곳에서 이유를 찾으러 배회하다 멈췄다 하는 본인의 삶이 담겨진다.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;lt;다시 조각되는 이름&#38;gt; &#38;nbsp;이름이란 사람이 어떤 대상을 구별하기 위해 사람, 사물 혹은 현상 등에 붙여준 단어이다. 그 이름들을 지우듯 기본의 형태만 남긴 오브제. 둘인 듯 하나인 듯 엉성하게 만들어진 책상과 비슷한 구조의 사물. 엉성한 구조 위에서 오브제와 오브제 간의 연관성을 만들어가는 행위는 이름에 대한 새로운 접근방식이 된다. 마치 어린아이가 사물에 이름을 붙여주고 생명을 불어넣어 이야기를 만들고 역할극을 하듯이, 구조물 위에 얹어진 형상과 오브제와의 관계 맺음을 통해 다양한 내용으로의 채워짐을 경험할 수 있게 된다.</description>

&#38;nbsp;&#38;lt;장소 없는 장소&#38;gt;는 코로나 팬데믹으로 인해 가상세계가 심화되고 산업화 이후, 기술의 발전에 따라 사라진 기존의 물리적 장소를 통해 변화된 장소의 개념을 다룬 전시이다. 본인은 사라진 공간이라는 장소의 개념을 사라진 주체와 연결한다. 고도의 기술력은 너와 나의 경계, 온라인과 오프라인의 경계를 허문다. 그래서 개인은 주체의 부재를 느끼며 바쁘게 살아간다. 주체의 부재로 인해 생성되는 ‘콕 집어 말하기 어려운 답답함, 불안감, 우울감’ 자신이 무엇을 향해 가고 있는지, 무엇을 원하고 좋아하는지 혼동되는 삶. 이를 극복하기 위해 요가나 명상 등 나를 찾기 위한 노력과 시도들이 넘쳐난다. 

‘살라바사나 Salabhasana’ 은 요가를 오랜기간 연마한 숙련자들이 할 수 있는 고난이도 동작이다.

동네에 수없이 생겨나는 요가학원들. 동시대인들의 살아남기 위한 몸부림. 그 어렵다는 살라바사나 동작은 그 몸부림의 극복일까 비극일까.&#38;nbsp;

“ 유승희는 우리의 일상에 큰 영향을 미치는 물리적으론 존재하지 않는 가상 공간을 탐색한다. 실존적 존재로서 인간은 그러한 사이버 환경 내에서 점점 모호하고 아이러니한 위치에 놓이게 된다. 그들은 물리적으로 존재하지 않지만 가상 활동에 적극적으로 참여하기 때문에 존재감을 가진다. 심지어 죽음도 지속적으로 재생되어 공유되는 이미지를 통해 온라인 플랫폼에서 새로운 삶으로 이어질 수 있다. 그러나 온라인에서 제시된 삶이 완전하지 않기 때문에, 유승희 작품에서 관찰되고 전달되듯이, 사람들은 이러한 장소 없는 곳에서 자아의 공허함을 채우기 위해 노력한다. 그녀가 사용하는 얇은 나무 패널은 무겁지만 가벼운 인간의 조건을 반영한다. 그녀는 또한 비극적인 동화처럼 냉소적인 분위기를 강조하기 위해 작품에서 전달되는 침울한 메시지와 함께 파스텔 색상을 사용한다. 유승희는 서울에 기반을 둔 신진 아티스트이다. 그녀는 이전에 일상의 특징인 집과 같은 친밀하고 사적인 공간을 강조하는 예술 작품을 제작했다. 코로나 펜데믹 이후 그녀의 관심은 우리의 삶으로부터 점점 더 중요한 부분이 되고 있는 온라인 공간으로 옮겨갔다. 비평가로서, 그녀는 끊임없이 그녀의 철학적인 생각을 그녀의 작품에 통합한다.” _ 최수경 (워싱턴 한국 문화원 큐레이터)

&#38;nbsp;인간은 죽음의 존재이다. 그래서 인간은 죽음에 대한 초월, 죽음의 극복에 대한 염원을 
여러 분야에서 다양한 방식으로 표출해왔다. 그중에서도 과학 기술의 발전은 인간의 불멸에 대한 염원을 가장 그럴듯하게 들어주고 있다. 기술은 죽음으로 인해 신체를 잃은 인간을 인터넷에 남겨지는 정보체를 통해 살아
있는 존재로 만들어준다. 예를 들어 고인이 되어버린 연예인의 소셜미디어 계정엔 여전히 팬들의 댓글로 
소통이 이어지는가 하면 죽은 사람을 증강현실(VR)로 재현해 내어 죽은 사람과 대화하며 잠시나마 죽은 이가 
다시 살아 돌아온 듯한 반가움으로 감동을 선사하는 등&#38;nbsp; ‘죽었지만 죽은 것 같지 않은’ 상태를 구현시킨다.
 &#38;lt;그 많던 AIBO는 어디로 갔을까? : 인공지능 로봇의 ‘죽음’ 시론&#38;gt;에서 신하경은 이러한 애매모호한 죽음의 상태를 인간의 ‘유령성(specter)’으로 표현한 바 있다. 그는 인공지능 로봇과 인간의 관계에 대해 아래와 같이 설명한다. 수명을 다한 인공지능 로봇이 폐기되지만 인공지능이 인간과의 관계 속에서 딥러닝을 통해 획득한 인간의 정보는 사라지지 않는다. 그렇기에 인간과 비인간의 존재가 생물적으로는 ‘죽은’ 존재(정보체)이어도 죽었다고 보기 어려운 유령성을 지닌다고 말한다. 인공지능 로봇과 인간 사이에 존재하는 유령성은 일상에서 사용되는 사물인터넷과 인간의 관계에서도 존재한다. 이렇듯 동시대에서 죽음은 기술로 인해 ‘죽어도 죽은 것 같지 않은’ 애매한 경계에 놓여 죽음의 의미를 혼동시킨다. 더불어 신체성에서 유령성까지 아우르는 지금의 인간은 자기 자신에게 신화성을 부여하게 되었다. Meta(구 페이스북) 캠페인 영상에서 등장하는 ‘모든 것이 내 세상’이라는 문구가 말해주듯이 모든 것이 나의 몸으로 종결된다. 인간은 죽음에 대한 두려움을 통해 죽음에 대해 사유할 수 있었다. 하지만 삶과 죽음을 오갈 수 있는 디지털 세계의 개인에게 죽음에 대한 두려움이나 공포는 사라지고 있다. 동시에 본질적인 죽음에 대한 사유 또한 중단시킨다.
 본인은 동시대에 존재하는 ‘죽어도 죽은 것 같지 않은’ 새로운 상태에서 느낀 이상한 언캐니함을 고대 그리스 벽화에 등장하는 신화적 상징물을 차용하여 어중간한 색감과 원초적인 방식으로 풀어낸다. 캔버스보다 더 평평한 나무 판넬을 통해 원초적인 방식의 직관성을 부각시켜 죽음과 죽지 않음의 상태를 오가게 만드는 동시대의 입체적인 죽음에 대해 평면적이며 단순하게 다가가고자 한다. 본질이란 꾸밈없는 초라함에 가까이 있을 때 드러난다. 그러므로 기교가 없고 다듬어지지 않은 듯한 기법, 전시장에 초라하게 서 있는 나무 막대기와 그 위에 간신히 붙어 힘없이 고개 숙인 머리카락 몇 가닥은 죽음의 본질에 다가가고자 하는 본인의 염원이 담긴 시도이다.

 &#38;nbsp; “메타버스 시대에서 인간이 가져야 할 자세는 무엇인가?”
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;여태까지 예술작품은 현실에 존재하는 사물인 동시에 현실의 언어로 정의 내릴 수 없는 사물로서 이중성을 가졌다.우리는 현실에서 한 사물로서 예술작품을 만나게 되지만, 예술작품은 그저 한 사물로서의 의미만 갖지 않는다. 예술작품은 일반 사물과 달리 예술작품 그 자체를 바라볼 수 있게 해주면서 동시에 그 예술작품 안에서 
펼쳐지는 일종의 감상, 즉 내재적인 과정을 통해 현실로부터 저 멀리 떨어져 존재하게 해준다. 이러한 예술작품의 모순적인 이중성은 예술작품이 현실과 가상, 외부와 내부를 자유롭게 넘나드는 자율성을 갖도록 해준다. 때로는 실제보다 더 정확하게 현실을 재현하는 현실이 되기도 하고, 때로는 현실로부터의 도피처나 유토피아가 되어 주기도 한다. 앞서 서술한 예술작품의 모순, 이중성, 자율성은 일반적으로 현실에 존재하는 예술작품이라는 사물 즉 ‘현실에서 시작되어 현실과 가상을 넘나드는’ 관점에서 설명되었다. 물론 미술사에서 뉴미디어의 등장은 기존 예술보다 더 다양한 가상성을 가져다줬지만, 뉴미디어 아트의 가상성 역시 물질적 한계를 벗어날 수 없었다. 뉴미디어 작품 대부분이 갤러리에서 소개되고 감상 되었기 때문에 예술작품은 계속 ‘현실에서 시작되는 것’으로여겨져 왔다. 
그런데 지금의 NFT 아트에서 그러한 관점은 유효하지 않다. 가상세계의 NFT 아트는 현실이 아닌 가상에서 생성되며, 그 작품에 대한 내재적 과정도 가상에서 이뤄지고 더 나아가 가상에서 거래되고 소유되기 때문이다. 처음부터 끝까지 오로지 가상 안에서 운영되는 새로운 형태의 예술은 유토피아를 꿈꾸는 현실 속 인간에게 기발하고 솔깃하며 환상적인 요소로 다가오기에 이에 빠져들게 만든다. 그래서 동시에 이러한 가상세계에서 현실의 의미는 희미해진다. 현실의 의미가 희미해짐은 예술작품의 자율성에도 영향을 끼친다. 왜냐하면 예술작품은 현실과 가상, 외부와 내부를 넘나드는 내재적인 과정에서 예술의 자율성을 갖기 때문이다. 그리고 그 자율성으로부터 예술작품의 존재가치가 생겨난다.
따라서 이러한 의미에서 본인은 가상세계에 대한 몽매주의적 수용에서 벗어나, 현실과 가상이 매개되는 예술작품의 자율성을 보존하고, 이에 대한 실천의 하나로 본인 계정의 NFT 작품을 통해 현실 속 흔적을 가상세계에 가져옴으로써 ‘메타버스 시대에서 인간이 가져야 할 자세는 무엇인가?’라는 화두를 던지고자 한다.
 늘 현실과는 다른 유토피아를 꿈꾸는 인간들은 열려있는 상태를 지향한다. 여기서 열려있는 상태란 자유로운 상태일 것이다. 어떤 특정 집단의 통제나 규제로 중앙집권화된 현실로부터 자유로워지기 위해 그에 대한 반발로 블록체인 기술이 만들어졌고, 더 자유롭고 제약받지 않는 세상을 만들기 위해 메타버스가 열린 것이다. 하지만 유토피아는 현실로부터 시작되며 현실이 없이는 존재할 수 없다는 것을 명심해야 한다. 인간은 현실과 가상(유토피아), 삶과 죽음, 선과 악, 정의와 부정의, 희망과 절망, 성공과 실패, 부자와 가난, 기쁨과 슬픔 등의 이율배반적인 요소가 혼재되어있는 수많은 선택에 놓여있기 때문에 자율적 존재가 되는 것이다.

&#38;nbsp;&#38;lt;사물이 되지 말자&#38;gt; 전시는 모든 것이 사물화를 통해 동일성 원리 안에 복속되어버린 오늘날의 현실에 대한 비판에서 시작되었다. 본인은 오늘날 미적 커뮤니티를 통해 자신이나 삶의 모든 것을 노출하는 문화에서 비롯된 ‘긍정 사회’1)에 주목한다. 미적 커뮤니티 속 긍정성만 드러내기 바쁜 체계는 서로를 소비해야 하는 한 컷의 상품형태로 바라보게 하며 이를 통해 개인을 획일적 주체로 만든다. 이러한 사물화된 사회에서 본인을 포함한 다수가 한 컷의 사물이 되어가고 있는 현실에 대한 외침으로 “사물이 되지 말자”라는 제목을 붙이게 되었다.
본인은 ‘긍정 사회’에 존재하는 모든 것들이 기만적인 요소로 뒤덮여 있다고 본다. 하지만 그와 달리 오늘날 ‘투명성’이란 단어는 정치나 경제를 넘어 사회 전반에서 강조된다. 그 이유는 투명성은 더 많은 민주주의와 정보의 자유, 그리고 더 높은 효율성을 가져다줄 것으로 기대되기 때문이다. 그런데 이러한 믿음은 계속해서 속이 들여다보이는 상태를 요구하기에 노출이 강요되며, 노출의 강요는 오히려 그들의 정직성을 잃게 만든다. 본인은 이러한 현실에 대한 비판과 함께 더 나은 세상에 대한 모색으로써 작품을 만들고자 했다. 따라서 일상적 사물을 수집하는 과정에서 꾸밈없이 있는 그대로를 드러내고 있는 사물을 발견하여 이를 통해 오늘날 잃어가고 있는 정직성에 대해 주목하고자 했다.
 일상에서 포착된 순간에 의해 수집된 사물들은 현실 그대로의 모습에 가까운 상태로 작품에 들어간다. 있는 그대로 전시장에 들어온 사물들은 서로의 경계를 구분하지 않는다. 각자의 위치에서 서로의 존재를 확인하는 상태로 유기적으로 연결되어 있을 뿐이다. 그 당시 그곳에 있던 이 사물들은 새로운 자리에 조금은 변화된 모양과 각도로 놓인다. 이 조각이 만들어지기까지의 과정에는 그 당시의 상태와 상황, 연구자의 조형적 시도, 공간과의 연관성, 주변에 위치한 사물 간의 관계 등의 수많은 요소가 존재한다. 따라서 사물을 만드는 과정은 계획적이고 확실한 구성으로 정해진 시간 내에 진행되는 것이 아니라 일련의 예측 불가능한 상황 속에서 무차별적으로 상호작용하면서 증식된다.

&#38;lt;사물이 되지 말자&#38;gt; 전시 전경, 2021


&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;lt;사물이 되지 말자&#38;gt;에 나오는 오브제는 하찮거나 별 존재감 없던 일상의 사물들을 재조합한 것이다. 이들은 사방에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 동시에 세심한 주의를 기울여서 보지 않으면 그 존재감을 느끼지 못하는 것이다. ‘있었는지도 모르고 사라지는 나무젓가락 포장지, 필요할 땐 반갑지만 불필요할 땐 망설임도 없이 버려지는 유연한 노란 고무줄, 설거지할 때마다 닦기를 미루게 되는 싱크홀, 먹다 남은 땅콩 껍질들, 나뭇가지’ 이러한 익숙하지만 낯설고, 없어도 되지만 또 없으면 안 되는 사물들은 어느 한 곳에 명확하게 속하지 못한 채 그 사이에서 비스듬히 걸쳐있다. 나머지로 취급받는 이 사물들은 어떤 식으로도 분류할 수가 없다. 분류의 과정에서 떨어져 나온 ‘나머지’로 총괄되어 불릴 뿐이다. 이러한 세상의 어설픈 것과 쓸데 없는 것, 약한 것에는 긍정 사회의 동일성 원리에 의해 삭제되는 찌꺼기의 모습이 투영되어있다.

 ‘다원적 정보력과 의사소통’이라는 이름하에 우리는 과도한 가시성의 장에 갇혀 그 안에서 눈에 띄는 상품 즉 사물이 되기 위해 끊임없이 부정성을 수정하고 다듬어 긍정의 것들로 포장한다. 그렇기 때문에 애매하고 걸리적거리는 부정성은 고민 없이 제거의 대상이 되며 포장 안에 가려진 ‘나’ ,‘너’, ‘우리’, ‘사회’의 모습은 기만으로 가득 차게 된다. 따라서 오늘날의 사회는 정직과 거리가 멀다.
 
반면 알랭 바디우(1937~)는 약함에 대해 ‘자체의 실제적인 내용 말고는 아무런 위세와 가식이 없으며 초라한 투박함만 가진 것’ 이라 표현한다. 이처럼 연약함을 갖는 찌꺼기의 사물엔 정직이 머문다. 이들은 어떤 것에 속하지 못하고 애매한 위치에 존재감 없이 있지만, 오히려 그 애매함과 무존재감은 묵묵히 그 자리를 지키게 함으로써 정직한 사물이 된다.

전시 전경엔 여백의 공간이 많으며 단순성과 단출함이 내재한다. 더불어 이 여백은 곳곳에 있는 생동감 있게 빚어진 비정형적인 조형이나 거친 드로잉과 함께 시적 상상력을 자극한다. 본인은 이러한 구성을 통해 단순해 보이지만 난해하며 형언할 수 없는 무언가를 담아낸다. 따라서 관람객은 생각을 멈출 수 없는, 낯섦과 친숙함의 순간이 중첩되어 끝없이 이어지는, 무한히 확장되는 열린 영역으로 나아간다. 흔하고 연약한 재료의 사용은 절대적이거나 강요적인 상태에서 벗어나게 한다. 따라서 약한 위치에 있는 작품은 관람객이 대상 자체의 정직한 상태인 실제성에 더 가까이 다가가도록 유도하며 그 과정에서 다수가 공존할 수 있는 자유로운 상태를 제공한다.

&#38;lt;아홉 개의 입과 두 개의 귀&#38;gt;는 코로나 팬데믹을 겪게 되면서 오프라인 전시가 중단됨에 따른 하나의 대응 방식으로 시도했던 온라인 그룹전시이다. 각자의 이야기를 디지털 방식으로 풀어냈으며, 본인은 전체 홈페이지 제작과 개인 작업 &#38;lt;무위자연&#38;gt;을 작업하였다.

세상은 점점 더 효율적이고 편리하게 발전하고 있는데 반면 인간은 더 바쁘게 애쓰며 살아가고 있다. 그래서 ‘늘 노력하고, 애써야하는 유위(有爲)의 삶 속에서 무위(無爲)를 찾아보자’라는 취지로 &#38;lt;무위자연(無爲自然)&#38;gt;을 작업하게 되었다.노자가 말하는 무위(無爲)는 곧 자연을 뜻한다. 그 자체로 존재하는 땅, 하늘, 물과 같은 순수자연을 말이다. 그 자연의 무위(無爲)를 인공으로 뒤덮인 오늘날에서 찾아보자는 것은 무리인 듯 보이지만 본인은 온라인의 자동성과 자발성을 통해 엇비슷한 무위자연을 누려볼 수 있다고 본다. 조금한 스마트폰 위에서 이루어지는 손가락의 까딱거림은 행동하지 않는 것처럼 보일 정도로 작은 움직임이지만 이를 통해 우리는 애쓰지 않고도 자신만의 우주를 열며 수없이 움직일 수 있다. 이와 같이 빠르고 간소화된 현대에서는 최소한의 힘으로 자동적이며 자발적인 상태가 만들어진다. 작품들은 이러한 온라인 자동성과 자발성을 이용하여 제작되었다. &#38;lt;무위자연(無爲自然)&#38;gt; 페이지에서 스크롤을 내리다 보면 수많은 드로잉이 등장한다. 이 드로잉 안에 숨어있는 링크들을 클릭의 까딱거림으로 따라가 보기도 하고 직접 드로잉 소품을 옮겨보거나 재조합해보면서 자신만의 이야기를 만들기도 하며 자연스럽게 움직일 수 있다. 따라서 이것은 하나의 놀이가 되어 아무렇게나 마음이 가는 데로 클릭하고 재배치하며 완성된다. 그러면 어느 한순간도 어깨에 힘을 뺀 채 살아갈 수 없는 세상에서 긴장을 풀고 즐기는 순간을 얻게 될 것이다.
